Kush Marijuana Seeds

Kush marijuana seeds: History of regular, autoflowering and feminized strains. Kush strains are at the root of indica marijuana genetics. Originating in the high wild places of the Himalayas these strains are generally tough and hardy, making them easy to grow for both beginners and experienced gardeners. No matter what you throw at Kush strains they generally respond with great yields of sticky bud. Kush bud outdoors marijuana cannabis As archetypal indicas, Kush strains are known for producing squat, bush like plants, an adaptation to arid and windy conditions. Coming from areas with poor soils means that they tend to be not too fussy about feeding regimes either. As opposed to sativas which have their roots in sunny, semi-tropical climates without such well defined growing seasons, Kushes like to finish early, before the harsh highland weather sets in. This means that they generally have shorter flowering periods than sativas; a boon for those of you who don’t want to wait for months on end for your plants to finish. Although there are many great hybrids available that originate from Kush strains, some of the original Kush genetics are still proving very popular today.

History of Kush Strains

The Kush strains of marijuana represent some of the oldest cannabis genetics you can find. Nobody is exactly sure where marijuana first originated, or whether it started out with indicas or sativas. The general consensus though, is that the first weed grew somewhere high in the uplands of Central Asia and the Kush strains have come from near this area for many thousands of years. Hindu Kush Mountains Kush strains get their name from the Hindu Kush area where they originate. The Hindu Kush is a vast range of mountains that stretches some 500 miles (800km) and is, in places, 150 miles (240km) wide. The Hindu Kush runs from Afghanistan at its south-western end, along the borders of Pakistan and Kashmir in northern India, to its north-eastern end where it buttresses the magnificent peaks of the Pamir mountain range on the Chinese border. It is part of the Himalayan region and divides the ancient valley of the Oxus from the Indus river valley, where we see the roots of the word indica. map of hindu kushSome of the purest Kush strains can be identified from their names, which come from places located in the Hindu Kush region.

Beneficial Properties of Kush Strains

The first Kush strains used in the west were selected landrace strains from the Hindu Kush area. These strains were 100% indicas and exhibited the adaptations to the harsh mountain environments which make Kush strains so popular and easy to grow:
  • Short bushy structure – makes an ideal choice for indoor grows with limited space and outdoor stealth grows;
  • Dominant main cola with lesser production on lateral branches – excellent for sea of green systems;
  • Good resistance to temperature fluctuations – great for novices and domestic grows where there isn’t lots of environmental control equipment;
  • Resistance to mold and pests – ideal for outdoor grows;
  • Tolerance of changes in growing environment – perfectly suited for beginners who make mistakes from time to time;
  • Hardiness to damage – making them easy to train;
  • High resin production – great for getting high!

Hashish

Although all of these traits are desirable, it is the last of them; the high resin production, that makes Kush strains so useful for creating the highest quality hashish. The whole Hindu Kush area is world famous for hashish production, with the renowned Afghan black/Pakistani black in particular having its origins in these parts. afghani pakistani black hash - gold seal Some of the names of the most famous hash types, such as Chitral and Mazar I Sharif come from areas around the Hindu Kush. Charas is perhaps the most famous hashish export from the Hindu Kush. Hash production seeks to separate most of the resin from the vegetative material i.e. the leaves and flowers. It is in the resin, which is located in the trichomes, that almost all of the psychoactive substances are found. Although methods of hash production vary depending on which area of the Kush you are in, the following technique forms the basis of hash production both in the Hindu Kush as well as in other hash producing areas. To make hash, the local farmers first dry their marijuana crop out in the field before bringing it in to dry some more. The plants are then threshed and beaten to remove the trichomes. The resulting product is sieved to remove the plant material, resulting in a powdery product known locally as ‘garda’, a substance similar to grinder kief. hash making afghanistan hindu kush The garda is sieved through a succession of graded screens. The result of each sieving is a different quality of garda. The first sieving is known as 1st garda and this is the best quality. Then comes 2nd garda and 3rd garda. Sometimes there may be a 4th garda but this is not always the case as the product is of a much lower quality. hash production manufacture hindu kush To turn the garda into hashish it must be heated and pressed. Traditionally this would have been done by hand and would be a time consuming process. Nowadays large quantities of garda are processed by an electrical machine which kneads and pounds the garda into a homogenous paste which is then pressed into moulds.

Growing Kush Strains

Kush strains come with a reputation as being some of the easiest weed there is to grow. Although this is not a hard and fast rule, it is a good rule of thumb. The reasons for this, as described above, stem from the plants’ adaptations to the harsh environmental habitat of the Hindu Kush region. Growers will find that most Kush strains can be pretty tolerant of a range of growing environments, both indoors and out. Most Kushes grow with a short stature and put the majority of their production into one central cola. This makes them ideal for Sea of Green systems where it is possible to fit multiple plants in close together under a light. Sea of green systems sometimes require the removal of lateral branching so that all of the production is at the top. Many Kushes heavily favor their central cola production naturally, making this process easier. Kushes are tolerant of a wide range of feeding. Although they will grow well with little feeding, they often like to be big feeders and heavy feeding can result in some incredible yields. Just keep increasing your feed until you see the first signs of nute burn, then knock it back a notch. The hardiness of Kushes means that they respond well to almost all training techniques. Although topping will do away with their habit of putting most of their growth into a main cola, it will give you multiple budding sites which your Kush strain will happily convert into extra colas. Once topped, especially if done several times, Kush strains will start to put out a profusion of lateral branching which will perform well in SCROG systems. kush marijuana scrog grow Outdoor growers will enjoy making the most of many Kush strains diminutive size to fit them into small spaces such as balconies. This is especially relevant to guerrilla growers or other growers for whom stealth is important. The Kush habit of finishing relatively early also means that outdoor growers in areas with a shorter growing season can attempt to grow outdoors whereas they may not be able to with some of the longer flowering sativas. The same goes for the Kush’s high tolerance of mold, excellent for growers in damp areas.

Kush Strains and Modern Hybrids

Because of the many excellent traits exhibited by Kush strains they quickly became a staple of modern breeding programs.
  • Hardiness;
  • Stability;
  • Robustness;
  • Flavor;
  • Yield;
  • Potency
All of these traits are in great demand for breeding programs and Kush strains can deliver these qualities easily.

The Famous O.G.

At first it was just straight up indicas, bred out from Kush landrace strains, that found popularity in the West. Afghani and Master Kush are two strains that have been known for decades. Then, as marijuana breeding techniques advanced, Kush breeding got serious, especially in the West Coast of America where Kushes found a new spiritual home. This is where the world famous OG Kush was born and there are few strains that are surrounded by so much mystery and legend. Firstly there’s the uncertainty surrounding the exact genetic heritage of OG Kush. Whilst some sources claim that OG Kush is simply an elite ChemDawg phenotype, the most credible story is that it comes from a cross between ChemDawg and a Hindu Kush X Thai Lemon hybrid. This cross was purportedly made by a grower called Putz, one of a collective of Southern California growers experimenting with ChemDawg in the mid ‘90s. There’s a lot of ambiguity about the OG name too. There are several interpretations of what the OG in OG Kush stands for: Many people think that it means Original Gangster after either the album by Ice T or an old strain of that name that used to be popular in the San Fernando Valley. Other stories would have us believe it means Over Grown as a tribute to overgrown.com, one of the biggest cannabis growers’ websites until it was shut down in 2006 and one time distributor of OG Kush seeds. Original Genetics is another theory as to the origin of the OG name. This is a simple reference to how rare and sought after the original cuts were in the ‘90s. Any grower wanting to replicate this strain would need to have the original genetics. Perhaps the most convincing story is that it means Ocean Grown; The story has it that once clones of the original OG Kush started circulating amongst the SoCal growers’ community somebody remarked to Putz that this Kush strain tasted so good it must be mountain grown, to which Putz apparently replied “No, this Kush is Ocean Grown”, referring to the grow operations in the San Fernando Valley that had begun to specialize in growing OG Kush. San Fernando Valley is still the epicenter of the OG Kush business and the strain has become inextricably linked with this area with the SFV cut being generally heralded as one of the best OG Kush phenotypes available. og kush cannabis plant - california weed Despite the quality of OG Kush, she’s not the easiest plant to grow and yields can be lower than with other strains. Consequently other great Kush strains that were available also saw a rise in popularity on the back of the OG, along with dozens of new hybrid strains with Kush genetics.

10 Notable US Kush Hybrids

US breeders and home growers have been specializing in Kush strains since the late 1980s. The west coast in particular has become something of a Kush haven with some of the finest Kush strains in the world coming straight out of California. The recent (and ongoing) changes in marijuana legislation have made it easier to work with weed in western states and breeders, seed banks and growers’ co-operatives and collectives there continue to dominate the Kush scene. Here we present you with a list, in no particular order, of 10 totally awesome Kush strains created in the USA.

Cali Connection - Tahoe OG Kush Seeds

Best For: Relaxing physical stone

cali-connection-tahor-OG-kush-marijuana-seeds Tahoe OG Kush from Cali Connection is a cross of two very fine OG Kush variations, blended together to make this great Kush strain. Cali Connection have taken an elite clone of OG Kush and crossed it with another OG Kush from the San Fernando Valley. The result is a strain that is robust and that offers reliably uniform results. Dense side branching make this strain suitable for a variety of training techniques. Buds can be very dense and heavy so extra supports for longer branches may be necessary. Tahoe OG has an intense odor of citrus underpinned by a deep fuel funk. There’s not much opportunity for stealth when smoking this weed. The hit is pretty instant and can be overwhelming. Expect a full-on OG hybrid stone. For those who like their stone heavy, we recommend going the full 10 weeks with this one and waiting for the trichomes to change color.

Reserva Privada - OG Kush Feminized Seeds

Best For: Pefect hybrid hit

reserva-privada-og-kush-feminized-marijuana-seeds With all the mystery surrounding the true roots of OG Kush, many seed banks have produced their own version. This one from west breeders Reserva Privada is as good a version as any out there. OG Kush can be a fussy plant that may require some experience to grow productively. She much prefers to grow indoors and Reserva Privada have bred her specifically as an indoor strain. Having said that, we’re sure there are plenty of growers who live in good stable climates that would beg to differ. What OG Kush likes best is stability. Try to avoid wild fluctuations in pH levels and temperatures, or exposing her to overwatering or drought. All training techniques will help, especially SCROG systems which will make the most of this strain’s bushy structure. If you do SCROG, make sure you top and lollipop to get most out of it. As explained above, yields with OG may disappoint some growers, especially commercial growers. However that hybrid hit that affects you both mentally and physically is more than worth it.

303 - Apex Kush Seeds

Best For: Rich and sweet flavor

303-Apex-Kush-Seeds Apex Kush is a strain given to us by 303 Seeds of Colorado. It is based on the genetics of the famous Triangle Kush which is named, surprisingly, not for the Emerald Triangle, but for the 3 areas of Florida that produce the most marijuana; Miami, Jacksonville and Tampa. As with all the OG based strains, Triangle Kush had weak branches that often bent or broke under the weight of the buds. She also had the same fussy feeding habits so 303 crossed her with their own strong and vibrant Hashplant from Uzbekistan. The resulting strain is not only more tolerant, it handles being grown outdoors much better than some of the original OGs. Yields are improved too. Apex Kush has a fresh citrus scent that has a sativa-type pine hint to it. There is something richer and sweeter going on there too. The deep and long lasting indica stone is well worth the extra couple of weeks that Apex Kush takes to finish when compared to many other Kushes.

Tickle Kush is a short and sturdy plant with excellent resin production. The hit is potent, but it’s not all lazy indica stone. Prepare for that beautiful hybrid hit that US Kushes have become famous for. A reliable source for Tickle Kush can be hard to find as its fame spread way faster than its production.

Its diminutive size makes it a good stealth plant as it will hide away nicely on patios or balconies. Those old school genetics also means that Master Kush is tolerant of a wide variety of growing conditions and will thrive both indoors and out.
