Kush strains of cannabis get their name from where they originated, in the Hindu Kush area of Northern India, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Kush strains are generally quite true to their Indica heritage and typify Indicas, presenting as short, squat, bushy plants with thick, wide fingered leaves that are leathery and dark green, often turning to shades of purple. Kush strains are normally quite easy to grow and their short flowering period (7-9 weeks) makes them of interest to commercial growers as well as the guerrilla gardener.
The flavour of Kush strains is often earthy, spicy and hash-like. Sometimes the smoke can be a bit harsh on the lungs. Kush strains tend to give a narcotic, spacey high, lazy but nice, and great for being sleepy, dreamy and at peace. Kush strains are also used for making hash and are the source of some good charas, temple ball and sticky black. These forms of hash also have a tendency to a heavy, physical, couchy stone.
There are many varieties of cannabis that have been bred out of Kush strains. It is possible to buy Hindu Kush cannabis seeds from many sources and this generally grows as a true to type Landrace strain. Other Kush based strains such as OG Kush, King Kush and Headband Kush seek to emphasise that Indica goodness and are all heavy hitting weed for stoners who love the couch. Whereas other strains, like Kushage, seek to mix up the Kush genes with a bit of Sativa, delivering an all round mix that represents the best of both worlds.
