Cannabis Sativa originates from the tropical and equatorial areas of the world, most notably South and Central America, Africa and South East Asia. The defining characteristics of Cannabis Sativa are:
- a tall leggy stature (often over 10ft (3m)) with long internodal lengths;
- thin, long-fingered leaves that are light green in colour;
- a “Christmas tree” growth pattern;
- multiple budding sites producing thin, loosely packed buds.
Sativas have developed these traits to adapt to their environment. In humid regions with lots of sunlight, plant competition can be fierce, and individual plants need to grow tall and strong to prevent being shaded out. Sativa strains tend to take longer to flower than Indica strains, sometimes over 13 weeks, and this is an adaptation to a long tropical growing season. Because of these traits Sativas can sometimes require a lot of attention in the grow room. Their sheer size can often be an issue and they can also be quite greedy for nutrients, rapidly converting them into spectacularly fast growth.
Sativa strains will thrive outdoors and it is often only with so much free space that they can truly stretch their legs, although this is only true if you have an appropriately warm climate. Sativas can be quite sensitive to sudden changes in their environment, particularly temperature changes. If given the ideal condition to grow full size however, Cannabis Sativa can produce some startling yields.
Although arguably not as easy or as quick to grow as Indica species, Cannabis Sativa has one huge advantage over Indicas; the high. A typical Sativa high is uplifting and euphoric and not at all drowsy. Many smokers are almost exclusively Sativa smokers and will go to great lengths to find that unique and cerebral hit.
Odours associated with smoking Sativa species are usually clean and fruity with fresh lemon or pine tones. The smoke itself is normally less harsh than with Indica species, being smoother on the throat and lungs.
When used in breeding programmes Sativa strains are usually exploited for their psychoactive qualities and their flavours, often being hybridized with Indicas purely in an attempt to make their size more manageable for the modern grow room.
