About White Rhino

Named for its thick, jagged and curving buds that resemble a rhinoceros horn, White Rhino is an example of Indica genetics at their very best. Tracing its origins back to the high, harsh environment of the Afghan highlands, it thrives in both heat and cold, in dry and wet climates, with or without consistent care and feeding. Careful breeding gave this strain exceptionally high yields. With White Rhino you get the potency and snowy crystallized buds of the White family in quantities you’ve only dreamed of. The cured nugs have a pleasant Kush smell with just a hint of berry freshness. The hit can be only be described as powerful. With THC levels off the charts, this is not a good smoke for beginners. Medicinally the narcotic effects of White Rhino have been used to treat chronic pain, insomnia and anxiety. There is a calm euphoric buzz in addition to the heavy body effects that will settle your mind and melt your cares away. This is marijuana for night-time use, unless you are the most experienced of tokers. Horn Shaped White Rhino Bud

History of White Rhino

The history of White Rhino is really the story of White Widow. This famous parent of White Rhino was released by Green House Seeds in 1994 and immediately began sweeping cannabis competitions. How exactly this potent, tasty hybrid came into existence and who deserves the credit for breeding her are topics of heated debate. The two parties involved separated on poor terms and created two distinct seedbanks:
  • 1. Green House Seeds
  • This seedbank is owned and run by Arjan, the self-proclaimed King of Cannabis. They say that in-house breeder Ingemar developed, refined and stabilized White Widow over a course of six years.
  • 2. Nice Seeds
  • Mr. Nice Seeds was started by Scott Blakey, who now uses the name Shantibaba. He worked with Arjan at Green House in the early 90’s, and his story is that he received the father of White Widow from a villager in Southern India. He crossed this strain with a Sativa of Brazilian origins, creating the first White Widow plants.
The split of Shantibaba from Green House Seeds was not a pleasant one. Both parties still have a lot of anger and resentment, and both feel like their work and ideas were stolen. It is a difficult story to unravel. Yet the one-time partnership produced some of the most famous and fabulous cannabis strains available today. Many of the strains released from Green House in the early 90’s are also available, sometimes under different names, from Mr. Nice Seeds. Both seedbanks claim their strain is the original, but we leave it to growers and smokers like you to tell us which ones they prefer: White Widow from Green House is Black Widow from Mr. Nice Seeds White Rhino from Green House is Medicine Man from Mr. Nice Seeds Great White Shark from Green House is Shark Shock from Mr. Nice Seeds Both seedbanks offer the famous Super Silver Haze While we cannot say for certain who deserves credit for breeding White Widow back to an Afghan Indica to create White Rhino, we do know that many different breeders in addition to Mr. Nice and Green House had the opportunity to work with White Widow. In 1996, after White Widow dominated the High Times Cannabis Cup, seeds were given to Nirvana and Dutch Passion. Both released their own White Widow strains within the year. Clones of White Widow made their way to Paradise Seeds and they too quickly offered their own version of this famous strain. Despite a rocky early history, White Widow quickly reached many seedbanks and breeders and thus became a common name among growers and smokers alike. While many crosses of White Widow are available, White Rhino is one that stands apart for its unmatched potency and hardiness. Sweet Cream Caramel Abundant Buds

Growing White Rhino

White Rhino is a short, stocky bush of a plant. Every feature screams sturdiness. The branches are fat and short, capable of holding even the heaviest of buds without extra support. The leaves are massive, deep green and almost leathery in texture. The horn-shaped buds are small, dense and hard as rock. Outdoors with unlimited space to grow, White Rhino can reach nearly 6 feet in height. Yet she thrives in smaller containers and stays considerably shorter indoors. You can do almost anything you like with her and still achieve high yields of sticky round buds.

Feeding White Rhino

This hardy strain requires very little from the grower. Like most Indica dominant hybrids, she actually thrives best with less nutrients. If you are growing in soil, start out with a high quality organic mix. You will find that you need only the most minimal amounts of fertilizer, if any, throughout the grow. Outdoors, where her roots are unrestricted, you will not need to fertilize at all, unless you are growing in an area of particularly deplete soil. Many indoor growers will use a hydroponic system for White Rhino. In terms of feeding, be sure to start out at the lowest level recommended by the nutrient label. Remember, the company producing the nutrients is trying to sell you more! Always follow a few basic rules when feeding any cannabis plant:
  1. Start out low. Keep an eye out for signs of nutrient burn throughout the grow.
  2. Balance your nutrients. Keeping the proper ratio of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus is essential for healthy plant growth. These ratios change through the grow cycle. For more information check out our page on proper feeding here.
  3. Flush your plants before harvest: Switch to pure water during the last week to 10 days before harvest to clear any residual nutrients from your buds. Failure to properly flush your plants will result in a harsh, chemical flavor in the cured buds that make them unpleasant to smoke.

For more information on proper feeding for your plants check out our Using the Right Nutrients page here.

Lights for White Rhino

Full Spectrum LED Cannabis Grow White Rhino is an easy-going strain which will reward the indoor grower with high yields under various lighting conditions. There are several options available to you: Compact Fluorescent Lights: CFLs have long been used by growers in small spaces or under stealth conditions. They are reasonably efficient, don’t produce excess heat and are cheap to install. But they are not nearly as effective as full spectrum LEDs. 2014 marked the turning point in the market, with a greater number of professionals choosing to use LEDs than any other grow light. Learn all about CFLs here. HID Lights: HID lights are another common option for indoor growers. There are two types, High Pressure Sodium (HPS) and Metal Halide (MH). The latter provides the proper spectrum of light for the vegetative stage, while the latter is used during flowering. HID lights are also losing the battle to full spectrum LEDs because they produce a lot of heat, which is not only an inefficient waste of energy (read waste of $$) but can also physically burn your plants. Learn all about HIDs here. Full Spectrum LEDs: So what’s the big deal with these lights? Why should you use them for your White Rhino grow? Full spectrum LEDs are the magicians of indoor growing, that’s why. If you thought your results were good using an HID set-up, you’ll be stunned at the end of your first harvest from full spectrum LEDs. Here’s why:
  • 1. Twice the Yield per Wattage vs. HPS
  • Let’s take the Halo and Spectrum King from as an example. In their tests using dried chilies, indoor growers with HPS lights achieved an average of 0.5 grams/Watt. In contrast, the Spectrum King produced 1-1.5 g/Watt, doubling or even tripling the harvest.
  • 2. Greater Efficiency vs. HPS
  • A 1000 Watt HPS light will consume 1085-1150 Watts in actuality, due to ballast inefficiencies. A high quality 250 Watt full spectrum LED will consume exactly 250 Watts.
  • 3. Extra Light Plants use to Thrive
  • Full Spectrum LEDs include two types of light commonly omitted in grow lights:
    • a. Green-to-amber light: You may have heard that plants don't use green light; they reflect it, thus their green coloring. While plants do reflect some green light, a lot of it gets used in pho While it is not used as efficiently as other wavelengths of light, it still affects growth. Full spectrum LEDs give your plants an extra boost by adding in green-to-amber wavelengths of light.
    • b. Far-red light: Necessary to mimic the normal photoperiods for plants
  • 4. Light for All Plants
  • Because these lights include wavelengths from the entire visible light spectrum and beyond, they provide the necessary light for plants indigenous to any latitude. Tropical Mexican Sativas, bushy Indicas from the Hindu Kush and even auto varieties with a heavy dose of Alaskan Ruderalis genetics will all thrive under full spectrum LEDs.
Learn more about using full spectrum LED grow lights here. No matter which lights you choose, here’s a tip to get the biggest yield out of White Rhino at the lowest electrical cost: Use a Sea of Green set-up for White Rhino. SOG growing is very efficient energetically. Because the plants are packed closely together, a relatively small Wattage will cover a large number of plants, actually decreasing your electric costs.

Training White Rhino

Once again, you have many options when it comes to pruning and training White Rhino. This is a plant that can be made to suit any grow space or environment. Indoor growers who have cloned a mother White Rhino and are looking for fast, efficient and abundant harvests may choose to use the Dutch Techniques of Sea of Green and Screen of Green. The grower places a large number of plants closely together, and stimulates flowering early by adjusting the lights. For best results be sure to give the plants a lot of light. Their close proximity to one another will encourage competition and the development of a single heavy cola on each plant. If you choose one of these methods, there are a few things you should do to achieve the best results:
  1. Feed lightlyYou don’t want your plants to get huge or stretch. Use a small amount of nutrients, and be especially cautious with the nitrogen;
  1. Water sparingly While you never want to stress your plants by letting them dry out completely, watering sparingly will help to limit vertical growth and focus the plant’s energies on its flowers;
  1. Don’t burn your plants Plants in a SOG set-up are particularly susceptible to heat damage. Especially if you are using HID lights, be sure to keep them high above the canopy and consider using slightly lower Watt lights. Full Spectrum LEDs are the best choice for SOG growing;
  1. Prune heavily Engage in two big pruning sessions during flowering. You want to remove all the side branches and lower leaves, so that all the energy goes into the buds.
Combining SOG or SCOG with Monster Cropping can boost yields even further. To Monster Crop you will take clones from a plant that is already flowering. The resultant tiny plants can be set straight to flowering, and end up with lots of extra flowering heads. This simple cloning technique allows you to take clones from each generation without maintaining a mother plant in a constant state of vegging. Monster Cropped Cannabis Outdoors You can achieve higher yields from each individual plant by allowing them ample horizontal space. If you do not prune her, White Rhino will grow into a thick, squat bush with many productive side branches. Between these two extremes there are many possible shapes and growth patterns that you can encourage in White Rhino using different techniques:
  1. Lollipopping, or trimming away all the lower branches, will encourage an umbrella shaped plant that focuses all of its energy into its flowering sites.
  2. Fimming, an extreme version of topping, can multiply the number of flowering heads up to four times.
  3. Super Cropping, a technique which stresses the plant by gently damaging its stems, will cause explosive growth in this already vigorous strain.

Growing White Rhino Outdoors

With its hardy Indica genetics, White Rhino is an option for outdoor growers in nearly any climate. The short stature, thick stems and heavy leaves of this tough strain help her to withstand extremes of cold and wet that would kill many of her hybrid relatives. The small, solid colas are resistant to pests and mold, making this strain an option for those in wet or maritime climates. Chilly nights only seem to enhance the rich flavors of the buds, and even mild early frosts won’t damage your harvest. White Rhino will also tolerate periods of heat and drought. If you have hot summer days and little rain, be sure to water in the mornings or late in the evenings. The large, heavy leaves of White Rhino may seem to droop and sag in the heat of the day, but this is normal and does not mean that the plants need more water. If the leaves appear wilted first thing in the morning before the sun hits them, that is a sign your girls are thirsty. Outdoor Cannabis Guerrilla Grow White Rhino needs about eight weeks to flower, and nine to reach her full glory of glistening white trichomes and maximum potency. While popular for its small size for indoor stealth grows, White Rhino can get large when grown outside. An opportunistic survivor, she takes advantage of the extra space to send her roots sprawling. Before the summer is over you could have huge cannabis bushes as wide as they are tall. While this is great news for a high-yielding harvest, it does make this strain a bit tricky to hide from your neighbors. If you are planning a guerrilla grow, be sure to pick your spot with care. Always grow marijuana far from populated areas and hiking trails. If you can find a suitable place to grow White Rhino, it is a very self-sufficient strain that will require few site visits.

Awards

Despite her huge yields, potent buds and straight-forward growth pattern, competitive recognition has eluded White Rhino. She has two prizes to her name:
  • 1996 High Times Cannabis Cup (2nd Bio)
  • 2005 Champions Cup, Madrid (2nd)
While White Rhino has not been showered with ribbons and cups, she has won the hearts of amateur growers and medicinal users the world over. Her name is a household phrase, often more quickly recognized than her more highly awarded parent, White Widow.

The Original White Rhino(s)

Much like parent strain White Widow, the rights to the “original” White Rhino are debatable. We’ll describe the version offered by Green House and the strain from Mr. Nice Seeds. If you’ve grown either one please let us know about your experiences in the comments below.

#1 Green House – White Rhino Feminized Seeds

Best For: Narcotic Effects, Huge Yield

Green House White Rhino Feminized Seeds Green House bills their White Rhino as a medicinal sleep aid and pain killer. This Indica bud offers huge yields of dense, crystalline buds. Easy to grow, White Rhino thrives indoors or out. If you plan an indoor grow, use a hydroponic set-up like deep water culture, ebb and flow or the wick system. These techniques allow you to carefully monitor nutrient levels and influence the growth of your plants. Coupled with SOG or SCOG and thorough pruning to reduce the lateral branches, hydroponic techniques can help you reach yields of 900 g/m2 indoors. Outside growers have it easy with White Rhino. This mold resistant, cold-hardy strain needs a bit of rich soil and a few drops of water and not much more. She is a great, low maintenance choice for a guerrilla grow. You can achieve 1200 g/plant outdoors with minimal care. The hit is all power. This is narcotic weed that dissolves pain, tension and stress. According to him, this is the real original. While her origins are uncertain, it is clear that this strain is an aptly named medicinal powerhouse. Like her sister from Green House, Medicine Man is easy to grow. Even the most novice of cultivators will have success, inside or out, in soil or hydroponic set-ups. Don’t overfeed this strain, she is easy to burn with too much nitrogen. Be careful handling these beauties close to the end of flowering. The buds are solid and coated in thick resin. This is powerful stuff, and if you don’t handle it carefully you may find yourself suffering almost toxic effects of serious contact high. Not only does Medicine Man boast big yields and lots of THC, she is also rich in a variety of other cannabinoids, including the famous CBD. Treat your harvest as a powerful pharmaceutical. This potent bud is also a favorite with Indica fans and those who enjoy a nice, numbing couch lock. For beginner growers White Rhino is especially rewarding, as it is not only easy to grow but produces massive yields. For indoor, outdoor, stealth, hydroponic or soil set-ups, this strain is suitable for every growing arrangement. You can’t ask for a more versatile, beginner friendly strain in the grow room. But beginners beware; those heavy crystalline buds you’ve harvested are not for the faint hearted. Smoke this powerful bud when you have nothing to do but curl up under a soft blanket and let your worldly cares melt away. White Rhino Seeds Thrive Outdoors
