What are Autoflowering Cannabis Seeds?

Auto-flowering cannabis seeds differ from regular cannabis seeds in that their flowering phase is not governed by photoperiod. This means that, unlike regular cannabis seeds, autoflowering seeds will commence flowering after a certain period of time, regardless of whether you have switched the lighting to 12/12 or not. It is this quality that makes auto-flowering cannabis seeds ideal if you require a constant supply of marijuana.

Auto flowering cannabis seeds

Autoflowering strains are typically very short in stature, as you might expect from a plant with such a limited vegetative phase. This makes them particularly useful for stealth grows. The small stature often means a relatively low yield, but this is compensated for by a very rapid turnover. It is up to the grower to decide if auto-flowering seeds are suitable for your needs and circumstances.

With their ruderalis heritage, auto-flowering cannabis seeds are quite often suitable for outdoor grows in northern climates, but check with your seed supplier that this is the case before planting them outside.

What is the History of Auto-Flowering Seeds?

Auto-flowering is a natural trait, inherited from wild growing ruderalis species. Ruderalis species are a subspecies of cannabis sativa that have naturalised in the northern wildernesses, mostly in Russia and Eastern Europe. In northern climes, where the summers are short, summer days can be very long with up to 24 hours of light per day. Under these atypical light conditions it is crucial for wild plants to flower and spread seed as early as possible before the onset of winter. Ruderalis, unlike other types of cannabis, has adapted to make the most of the long days of short northern summers by developing the ability to flower in a short period of time, regardless of the length of daylight available.

The availability of auto-flowering versions of quality cannabis species is the result of intense and diligent breeding programmes. By crossing the auto-flowering properties of ruderalis with the THC production of other varieties, breeders have developed potent strains that will commence flowering within a month of planting (sometimes as little as a fortnight) and finish in as little as 8-10 weeks, all under 18hrs of light. The auto-flowering trait is recessive however, and isolating the trait through hybridization requires a great deal of time and experience.

How to Grow Auto-Flowering Seeds

Many cannabis growers use auto-flowering cannabis seeds as part of continuous hydroponic grow systems. With a bit of planning it is easily possible to set your grow room up to produce a continuous supply of buds from auto-flowering seeds.

One of the greatest advantages of auto-flowering seeds is that they avoid the need for separate grow rooms and nurseries. Because the lighting regime doesn’t change throughout the grow, it is possible for all plants to share the same room regardless of what stage of growth they are at.

With such a short grow cycle, pot size, light quality and nutrients all play a crucial role (even more so than normal) in defining the size of the yield.

So with your grow room under a continuous 18 hour light cycle what you need to concentrate on is keeping it full and productive. Stagger planting new seeds by a couple of weeks to keep a continuous supply growing. Plant new seeds each time you either harvest buds or remove a male. Male plants of auto-flowering strains will show themselves between 2 and 3 weeks after germination, about a week before females.

All auto-flowering cannabis strains work well in both soil and hydro systems. For best results plant the newly germinated seeds directly into their final pots (1-2 gallon or 5-10 litres) and place them directly under 18 hour lights. Beware, smaller pots can result in smaller yields.

Start young plants on a veg phase nutrient regime at about 1-2 weeks. Switch to flowering phase nutrients as soon as you see flowers begin to form, usually at about 4 weeks. This is also the right time to switch from MH to HPS lighting if that is what you are using.

For outdoor marijuana grows in the northern hemisphere, May – August is the optimum time for growing auto-flowering cannabis strains, although with a bit of planning you can organise successive harvests right through to November.

Mature auto-flowering cannabis strains are normally no more that 20” (50cm) tall, this makes them ideal for high density, compact grow systems similar to Sea of Green set-ups.

What Auto-Flowering Strains are available?

There are lots of varieties of auto-flowering cannabis seeds available on the market. Perhaps the most famous is the original Lowryder, one of the first auto-flowering strains to become commercially available. Lowryder is also responsible for a whole range of hybrids including Lowryder#2 and Easy Ryder seeds.

Other auto-flowering cannabis strains of note include Blue Cheese, Auto Bubbleicious and Nirvana Short Ryder.

    • Autos are normally easier to grow than regulars. Did you get them from a reputable dealer? I have had some mixed success with autos and I think that many are rushed to market to exploit the current buzz about auto strains. I have had 5 seeds in a pack and had 2 massive, 2 tiny and one no show.

  5. I been growing for years, but never any of the autoflowering strains. Recently I been thinking of trying to grow some of the autoflowering seeds. They say that when these plants are growing, you have to let it grow out however it decides to grow. And that you are not supposed to trim anything off, not like you would on a non-auto plant. Is there any truth to that or no? And also, how do you start feeding one of these plants when it starts to flower? Any help anyone can give me is deeply appreciated:

    • Hi Shy
That’s right. When you trim and train regular plants they take a few days to recover from it each time. But being as you control the life cycle then you can afford to wait for this to happen. With autos the clock is ticking as soon as the first shoot shows, this means that any slight stress or knock back to the plant comes out of the final yield. A bit of LST is fine, just to expose more heads to the light. You can even remove fan leaves if they are blocking bud sites. But it is best not to cut or trim any growing tips as this stresses the plant and slows down the whole process.

  7. Hey Bushman you rock with your text! I tottally agree with you and with your simple words and saying there isn’t a set rule about all of this growing world. Especialy the part of the sinsemilla or seedless weed that isn’t as potent (to a sgnifificant and perceptible level) as a weed with seeds within – it’s about the weight and price value on the weed market simply put.

There aren’t strickt rules about growing. Light leaking ruins it all for good?? BS, plants are not a machine! Etc goes on and on… Thx

As far as the distance of the lights, it depends on their wattage, but a general rule of thumb is to put your hand under it and feel when the heat gets close to your own body temperature and that for a 600w Sodium would be between 12″ and 18″ / 300mm and 450mm.

im thinking about ordering from seedsman bought 10 seeds , dont know which strain yet, but since im really new to this , i’m thinking to plant all 10 seeds in a not too big closet of mine, and if any male show up i just let them pollinate the females.
i have a Hps 250 watt lamp, i might get another one if recommended by any one. when u guys say up to hundreds of seeds per plant, are u being serious whit that shit? it’s just that i was really thinking about 50 seeds per plant or something like that…

How much square ft do you have?
With a 250w you will get good growth from around 2-3 square ft.
        A 400w around 3-4 square ft.
        A 600w around 4-5.
I have used 3 600w sodium over a growing space of 2.5 meters square to a very good results. There are better ways by using those light movers which move the light down a rail attached to the ceiling.
As far as trying to make your own seeds, this is something that makes little sense to me for varying reasons.
Firstly it comes down to, do you really want 100s of seeds?
Secondly the THC starts to degrade at a certain point, you can tell by looking at the crystals under at least a 20x zoom microscope. They will go from being clear crystal balls into cloudy balls.
Thirdly for some reason the seeds that you get from home grown seeds, seems to be either sub standard or prone to things like hermapharidites or mutated leaf structure and things like that.
So unless you don’t mind weed with seeds in every individual bud and then spend months growing substandard plants that could flower themselves, go for it.
If it was me I’d find a good supplier and grow what you like to smoke.

  20. They create flowers just like other cannabis plants. The reason they flower automatically is because they come from northern lattitudes where summers are short with incredibly long days. These strains are adapted to these conditions where plants need to flower and spread seed quickly before the return of winter.

i have seeded many plants it depend how hard u pollinate the branches.
if u have different males u can pollinate one female by multiple males. put the males in there own bags shake the pollen out in the bag. then put the bag on one branch of the female and secure it with a rubber band. shake the bag and leave it on for at least 20 min. this will produce any where from 200 to 500 seeds a branch, depending on the plant size and type.

I was wondering about what you said:
“my first auto grow i aquired 16 seeds from a friend. I GREW THEM ALL OUT AT ONE TIME ( 16 plants under 400watts.) and out of the 16 i got 1 single male about 10 inches tall. i let him go and now ive got in the range of 10,000+ seeds from that one single crop”
How many females did you pollinate? all of them? A friend of mine said he pollinated 2 females of sour60 and got around 7000 seeds, could that be true? I’m growing my finale batch of autoseeds and need to produce some more, but I also want some sensimillia, so I am wondering roughly how many seeds I will get on each female?

  37. also, making autoflower strains yourself is fairly easy. ive taken autoflower males and crossed them with non-autos, and have had great success. cross the male or female with something other than autoflower, grow seeds from that plant out, and look for the autoflower trait to surface. once you get an auto male and female from your crop of crossed seeds, let those breed more seeds and grow another batch out . keep doing this until you get a fully autoflowering line. ive done this with original panama red, northern lights, aurora borialis, super skunk, purple kush, euphoria , purple elephant and about 20 others. i even grow the odd auto in my flower bed right in the middle of town for everyone to see. ive yet to have one single person say ‘hey, that looks like cannabis!”. also, on growing the seed crop, do remeber that no matter what BS youve heard or read online, seeded pot is just as potent as non-seeded pot, just with seeds. the whole sensimillia started back in the day as most people complained that the majority of the weight of the weed they were getting was seeds and stems, so sensi was born. ive been growing about 40 years now and can tell you that just because you seed acrop doesnt mean your going to loose potency, it just means youll get a little less smokable weed.

  38. with autoflower strains you DONT switch to 12/12. 18 hours of light is recommended.

lighting depends on alot of factors. you can grow autoflowers in a closet with a 100 watt light bulb, on a window sil with only natural outdoor lighting, or in a werehouse with 10,000 watts. theres no set rule on lighting

ive been growng autos since they hit the market. one suggestion. unless you enjoy getting robbed ever so often buying new seeds, i always recommended to everyone wanting to grow autos to use your first batch of seeds ( weather purchased or aquired from friends) to MAKE A SEED CROP. dont cull your males. if you grow an auto right, leave the males and nurture and encourage seed growth, youll not need to purchase seeds ever again. my first auto grow i aquired 16 seeds from a friend. I GREW THEM ALL OUT AT ONE TIME ( 16 plants under 400watts.) and out of the 16 i got 1 single male about 10 inches tall. i let him go and now ive got in the range of 10,000+ seeds from that one single crop. no worrying about “will customs get them” or anything else from ordering seeds from overseas, ect.
