Best Auto Flowering Cannabis Seeds

Auto-Flowering Cannabis Seeds

Top 10 Best Autoflowering Seeds

Maybe you’ve written off auto-flowering seeds because you’ve heard that their yields are low, their phenotypes erratic and their highs less potent than those of their light-dependent sisters. Perhaps that was once true, but many breeders have been hard at work and they have produced what may sound like a miracle: high yielding, hard hitting, reliable auto-flowering seeds. It is time to give autos another chance. We have the current, 2015 Top Ten Auto-Flowering Seeds to help point you in the right direction, but first let’s review a little…

What are auto-flowering cannabis seeds?

Auto-flowering seeds are not light dependent for flowering. They germinate, shoot up a few leaves and start setting flowers, without you fussing over their light schedules.

Huh. That’s weird. How did that come about?

All auto-flowering seeds are the result of crossing our well-known and much loved Sativa and Indica plants with the somewhat less popular Ruderalis strains. Ruderalis is a type of cannabis that evolved to thrive in the 18-24 hour daylight of summers in Northern Russia and the Northern parts of Eastern Europe. There the summer days are long, sometimes endless, and by the time they start to shorten it is far too cold for a plant to be making flowers.

Ruderalis Wild

As you probably know our normal and familiar cannabis plants require a switch from 24 hours of light to 12 in order to stimulate flowering, without which they just veg and veg. If wild Ruderalis followed this example, all its flowers would freeze before setting seed. So it switched to a time schedule, instead of a light schedule, producing flowers as early as 3 weeks after germinating.

What that means for you in the grow room:

  • Faster flowering=shorter wait for the harvest
  • No need for separate vegging and flowering rooms
  • Plants of different ages can all be grown together, leading to:
  • A CONSTANT supply of marijuana

So why have I heard that they aren’t all that great?

The flaws in auto-flowering seeds come from their roadside origins. The reason you haven’t smoked any pure Ruderalis is simple – it is the ditchiest of ditch weed. Hardy, compact, resilient and frankly, boring. The THC content of Ruderalis strains tends to be low, as are the yields and the highs are weak and lack the psychedelic effects so many of us seek. These traits showed in the early autos- they were weaker than their sister strains and their yields were lower. The ease and speed of growing simply didn’t make up for their lack of oomph, or compensate for the small harvests.

But… Breeders are pretty good at what they do.

Auto-flowering seeds have been around for awhile now, and the breeders have gotten savvy. With intensive breeding, they are now whipping out auto seeds that produce anywhere from 500-1000g/m2 and will put you on the couch for hours.

How to grow your auto seeds:

Auto-flowering plants tend to be small (though there are exceptions, check out Lemon Haze Auto below) and do well in high density grow systems like Sea of Green. They can also thrive in containers, but don’t like to be transplanted. Germinate them in their final pots (1-2 gallons works great).

SOG Auto

One of the great advantages of auto seeds is the possibility of staggering your planting for a continuous crop in the same space. Each time you harvest a bud or remove a male (they tend to show 2-3 weeks after germinating) plant a new seed. No need to change the light; most autos do best on 18 hours of light a day from germ to harvest.

For the biggest yields, you do have to pay attention to feeding. It is important to switch from veg stage nutrients to flowering nutrients at about 4 weeks after germination or as soon as you see flowers starting to form.

Most autos perform beautifully outside, often giving higher yields than their indoor counterparts. The Ruderalis genetics lend these strains a degree of hardiness; they are often mold resistant and able to handle fluctuating temperatures and odd watering schedules better than their pure Indica and Sativa relatives.

So you’re ready to give autos a try?

You really should. The intense breeding programs of the last few years have produced some really remarkable strains. These are autos that you would think were purely Indica/Sativa, if it weren’t for the fact that they grow FASTER and EASIER than any light dependent seeds you’ve tried.

To sum up the auto-flowering seeds…

Auto-flowering cannabis has finally made the transition from great idea to great reality. It took a long time. The first auto seeds, the original Lowryder by The Joint Doctor, came out around 2003. We are twelve years and hundreds of plant generations in to auto breeding, and we are finally seeing the plants of our dreams. Thanks to the tough, adaptable genetics of the wild Ruderalis, growers everywhere can now have the pleasure of growing fast, heavy yielding, sweet smoking cannabis without the hassle of having two grow rooms. So ditch the light schedules and give our favorite auto-flowering seeds a try:

It is the best of its parent strains- fruity aroma from the Joint Doctor’s Lowryder #2 coupled with the growth, high resin production and pleasant, motivating cerebral high of the Vision-AK47. • What stewart said and check that your soil is lite, not overly rich and not overly moist. Also fertilize at No More than quarter strength until the plant is 11 inches tall, then keep it at half strength.

    • Autos are normally easier to grow than regulars. Did you get them from a reputable dealer? I have had some mixed success with autos and I think that many are rushed to market to exploit the current buzz about auto strains. I have had 5 seeds in a pack and had 2 massive, 2 tiny and one no show.

  9. I been growing for years, but never any of the autoflowering strains. Recently I been thinking of trying to grow some of the autoflowering seeds. They say that when these plants are growing, you have to let it grow out however it decides to grow. And that you are not supposed to trim anything off, not like you would on a non-auto plant. Is there any truth to that or no? And also, how do you start feeding one of these plants when it starts to flower? Any help anyone can give me is deeply appreciated:

    • Hi Shy
That’s right. When you trim and train regular plants they take a few days to recover from it each time. But being as you control the life cycle then you can afford to wait for this to happen. With autos the clock is ticking as soon as the first shoot shows, this means that any slight stress or knock back to the plant comes out of the final yield. A bit of LST is fine, just to expose more heads to the light. You can even remove fan leaves if they are blocking bud sites. But it is best not to cut or trim any growing tips as this stresses the plant and slows down the whole process.

Especialy the part of the sinsemilla or seedless weed that isn’t as potent (to a sgnifificant and perceptible level) as a weed with seeds within – it’s about the weight and price value on the weed market simply put.

There aren’t strickt rules about growing. Light leaking ruins it all for good?? BS, plants are not a machine! Etc goes on and on… Thx

In my experience it is always a good Idea to have a look who’s been winning the Cannabis Cup over the many years people have been doing this like a science. I personally use Positronics though you could try The Sensi Seed Bank, both previous Cup winners with many more to choose from.
As far as the distance of the lights, it depends on their wattage, but a general rule of thumb is to put your hand under it and feel when the heat gets close to your own body temperature and that for a 600w Sodium would be between 12″ and 18″ / 300mm and 450mm.

With a 250w you will get good growth from around 2-3 square ft.
        A 400w around 3-4 square ft.
        A 600w around 4-5.
I have used 3 600w sodium over a growing space of 2.5 meters square to a very good results. There are better ways by using those light movers which move the light down a rail attached to the ceiling.
As far as trying to make your own seeds, this is something that makes little sense to me for varying reasons.
Firstly it comes down to, do you really want 100s of seeds?
Secondly the THC starts to degrade at a certain point, you can tell by looking at the crystals under at least a 20x zoom microscope. They will go from being clear crystal balls into cloudy balls.
Thirdly for some reason the seeds that you get from home grown seeds, seems to be either sub standard or prone to things like hermapharidites or mutated leaf structure and things like that.
So unless you don’t mind weed with seeds in every individual bud and then spend months growing substandard plants that could flower themselves, go for it.
If it was me I’d find a good supplier and grow what you like to smoke.

    • HA Ha,I was going to post but michaelnock88 nailed it. That’s not to say there won’t come a time when you’ll want to pollinate a budd.

  23. I have two auto white widows in the closet under 400watt hps my plants sprouted 7 weeks ago. They started flowering in the 4th week and im still not done with flowering. Im growing them under dwc and they are really fat and have tons of branches. Is it normal for autos to take this long?

  24. They create flowers just like other cannabis plants. The reason they flower automatically is because they come from northern lattitudes where summers are short with incredibly long days. These strains are adapted to these conditions where plants need to flower and spread seed quickly before the return of winter.

  26. hey sour60guy
i have seeded many plants it depend how hard u pollinate the branches.
if u have different males u can pollinate one female by multiple males. put the males in there own bags shake the pollen out in the bag. then put the bag on one branch of the female and secure it with a rubber band. shake the bag and leave it on for at least 20 min. this will produce any where from 200 to 500 seeds a branch, depending on the plant size and type.

  27. Hi Bushman
I was wondering about what you said:
“my first auto grow i aquired 16 seeds from a friend. I GREW THEM ALL OUT AT ONE TIME ( 16 plants under 400watts.) and out of the 16 i got 1 single male about 10 inches tall. i let him go and now ive got in the range of 10,000+ seeds from that one single crop”
How many females did you pollinate? all of them? A friend of mine said he pollinated 2 females of sour60 and got around 7000 seeds, could that be true? I’m growing my finale batch of autoseeds and need to produce some more, but I also want some sensimillia, so I am wondering roughly how many seeds I will get on each female?

  32. I have 3 auto Bomb girls growing outside – southern hemiphere. Started them under lights and put them out at 2 weeks.
It’s been 1 month now & they’re still only 2-3 inches tall & still spindly. Have developed leaves, a bit bushy on top, almost too heavy for the stems.
    Normal or ??

  33. I’m going for my first auto flower grow. I only started with 2 feminized seeds, I did plant in small planters, so I guess I need to change that up. I have them under LED lights, I have no idea how close the light needs to be but I have it about 14 inches. I wish there was a step by step idiot guide to doing this, I can grow an awesome green house of food but this new journey is making me nuts. :) Any help would be great! Peace

  38. 18 hours per day all the way through for autos, metal halide lamp for the first 2/3 weeks then switch to HPS bulb for the remaining time

  39. you want to make sure that if your plant is an auto, always keep a constant 18 hours on your plant. switching to 12/12 will simply diminish yields.

  40. you don’t auto flower at what hr you want just stay at 18-24 hr check the buds for when its time to harvest ( most times you get a time span for seedling to flowering on the seed box the seeds comes in)

  41. also, making autoflower strains yourself is fairly easy. ive taken autoflower males and crossed them with non-autos, and have had great success. cross the male or female with something other than autoflower, grow seeds from that plant out, and look for the autoflower trait to surface. once you get an auto male and female from your crop of crossed seeds, let those breed more seeds and grow another batch out . keep doing this until you get a fully autoflowering line. ive done this with original panama red, northern lights, aurora borialis, super skunk, purple kush, euphoria , purple elephant and about 20 others. i even grow the odd auto in my flower bed right in the middle of town for everyone to see. ive yet to have one single person say ‘hey, that looks like cannabis!”. also, on growing the seed crop, do remeber that no matter what BS youve heard or read online, seeded pot is just as potent as non-seeded pot, just with seeds. the whole sensimillia started back in the day as most people complained that the majority of the weight of the weed they were getting was seeds and stems, so sensi was born. ive been growing about 40 years now and can tell you that just because you seed acrop doesnt mean your going to loose potency, it just means youll get a little less smokable weed.

  42. with autoflower strains you DONT switch to 12/12. 18 hours of light is recommended.

lighting depends on alot of factors. you can grow autoflowers in a closet with a 100 watt light bulb, on a window sil with only natural outdoor lighting, or in a werehouse with 10,000 watts. theres no set rule on lighting

ive been growng autos since they hit the market. one suggestion. unless you enjoy getting robbed ever so often buying new seeds, i always recommended to everyone wanting to grow autos to use your first batch of seeds ( weather purchased or aquired from friends) to MAKE A SEED CROP. dont cull your males. if you grow an auto right, leave the males and nurture and encourage seed growth, youll not need to purchase seeds ever again. my first auto grow i aquired 16 seeds from a friend. I GREW THEM ALL OUT AT ONE TIME ( 16 plants under 400watts.) and out of the 16 i got 1 single male about 10 inches tall. i let him go and now ive got in the range of 10,000+ seeds from that one single crop. no worrying about “will customs get them” or anything else from ordering seeds from overseas, ect.

  48. NO, you can not clone auto’s
They (clones) will NOT return to veg and if done early the cutting will simply continue it’s flowering and not increase in size

    • AutoflowerWeed

You can clone them but it has no point because the clones will flower at the same time so you will have a bunch of flowering clones.
