Best Marijuana Seeds for Spring

Spring has Sprung… Have your Seeds?

Best Marijuana Seed Strains for Spring

Spring is just around the corner, and it is time to start planning your next marijuana grow. If you plan to grow cannabis outdoors this summer, now is the time to start germinating seeds or setting clones under lights inside. The strongest, largest outdoor plants are those that get the best start. Indoor growers should get planning as well to ensure the first big harvest in early summer.

Spring Marijuana Planting

Start Your Outdoor Strains… Inside

If you start your outdoor strains inside they will be stronger, healthier and have a better chance of surviving any late frosts or nasty weather. Marijuana isn’t much different than any other common garden plant. Consider cabbages, or better yet, tomatoes. Tomatoes and cannabis have very similar growth patterns. If you live in a temperate climate, like most of us do, your growing season is limited on both ends by frosts, chilling rain and even snow. Yet farmers from Maine to Wyoming manage to harvest tomatoes each summer. They do it by starting their seeds inside, as much as two to three months before their last frost date. You can use the same technique to extend your cannabis growing season.

Best Marijuana Seeds for Spring

We’ve compiled a list of our favorite marijuana strains for springtime growing. Most of these are potent, high yielding strains that are easy to grow for the beginner. There are a couple Sativa dominant monsters too… they hit so beautifully, and by starting the seeds indoors well ahead of time you can get a good harvest in most climate zones.

Germinating Cannabis

The first step is germinating your seeds. For best results, try soaking them for 12 hours in plain tap water. Then you can either keep them in a damp paper towel covered in plastic till they sprout, or plant them into soil or another growing medium and keep them moist. Again, covering them with plastic will help keep the growing medium from drying out. Your seeds should sprout within a week to ten days. They don’t need any nutrients at all until 3-5 days after sprouting. If you are raising your seedlings in a good quality potting soil, they won’t need any nutrients at all until they are transplanted outdoors.

Raising Cannabis Seedlings Under Lights

Once your seeds have germinated you need to keep the seedlings under lights. Light deprived plants will stretch and reach towards their light source, resulting in long, weak stems and poor growth later on. You don’t need a high tech full spectrum LED set-up to care for your young seedlings. A bright, south facing window works wonderfully, or you can use CFL or Metal Halide lights. You can keep young cannabis plants indoors for one, two or even three months before transplanting them to your outdoor garden after the last frost. Just be sure to transplant them into larger containers as they grow to avoid root binding.
